Mishipeshu is a melodic metal band based in superior, Wisconsin that draws heavily from the folk, viking, and symphonic metal sub generes.. forged from the remnants of an abandoned cover project, the group was reshaped into something heavier, stranger, and far more ambitious.
The project began in 2024, when Nathan Owen and Jonah Kosobuski started playing together with the goal of building a band from the ground up. After months of searching for the right lineup and direction, the group began shifting toward original music in early 2025. What started as a handful of rough ideas quickly evolved into a more focused sound built around galloping rhythms, melodic guitar work, nautical atmosphere, and mythic storytelling.
The name Mishipeshu was adopted in late 2025 as a tribute to the band’s Lake Superior home and the region’s Native lore. Known as the Water Panther or Spirit of Lake Superior, Mishipeshu is a scaled, horned feline with a serpent’s tail, often associated with danger, mystery, wealth, and chaos. Its eternal conflict with the Thunderbird drew a natural connection to the band’s viking and nautical themes, echoing the mythic struggle of Thor and Jörmungandr.
After several lineup changes, Mishipeshu solidified into a six-piece force with Nathan Owen on rhythm guitar, Jonah Kosobuski on bass, Kyle Sanford on lead guitar, Jevin Joki on drums, Levi Smith on vocals, and Jason Anderson on keyboard. Each member brings a different background to the band, blending technical metal, folk influence, harsh vocals, cinematic keys, and relentless live energy into a sound that is both aggressive and atmospheric.
In 2026, Mishipeshu is preparing to release an EP, with a full-length album planned to follow later in the year. With its roots planted firmly on the shores of Lake Superior, the band is setting out to bring its own brand of mythic metal to a much larger stage.
